Last weekend was an extremely busy one for the Galashiels based 2180 Squadron of the Air Cadets. As it turned out it was a weekend lined with Gold, Silver and Bronze for the Gala Lads and Lasses all against a background of clear blue skies and the smell of aviation fuel!

Cadets from Galashiels based 2180 Squadron Air Cadets travelled to Peffermill Playing Fields in Edinburgh to compete against 17 other Squadrons in the Annual Inter Squadron 7-a-Side football competition – and won! The Squadron surprised a number of more fancied teams on their way to the final where they beat Dunblane Squadron 2-0. Local rivals from the St Boswells based Roxburgh Squadron were despatched after a penalty shoot out with the Gala Lads coming out on top.

The Gala team were captained by Sgt Angus Stanners who had travelled back the previous day from a national Air Cadet Athletics Meet at the Defence College of Engineering at RAF Cosford. Angus took Bronze in the 100m Sprint and silver in the 200 m at the meet. Angus will now return to Cosford in August to take part in the Air Training Corps v Midland counties Athletics Clubs Invitation Athletics Meet.

While the Squadron football team were enjoying their surprise success another 8 cadets from the Squadron travelled to RAF Leuchars in Fife for Air Experience Flying in the Grob Tutors of  12 Air Experience Flight who are based at the Fife fighter station.

In the next two weeks the Squadron will see a number of Cadets travel to summer camps at RAF Cottesmore in Rutland home of the Joint Harrier Force, Aldergrove in Northern Ireland and Rheindahlen in Germany.
