The basic criteria needed to receive the Gold award:
Start between 16-23


Service
Chose one form of service and train and/or give practical service to others of at least 12 months.


Examples:: Community service, lifesaving, mountain leadership, welfare, youth service training, and many others.
Skills
Choose a hobby or topic to study or some other leisure interest; follow it regularly for 18 months (12 months if you have your Silver) and improve your skill or knowledge. You can if necessary change your choice during this period.


Examples:: Moto cycles, fishing, fashion, drama.
Expeditions
After basic training including three practice journeys (one if you have your silver), plan and carry out a four day venture in wild country including three nights camping. The venture can be either an


Expedition - covering a minimum of 80 km (50 miles) on foot.

or an

Exploration - Complete an approved study or other activity in wild or open country including at least ten hours journeying. or

Other Adventurous Project
- approved adventurous project of an equally, or more demanding nature.

Expeditions on horseback, cycle or by canoe or boat can also be undertaken.
Physical Recreation
Take up a physical activity for at least six weeks, reach a certified standard or show improved performance.


Examples:: Squash, underwater swimming, weight lifting, water skiing
There are over 80 activities to choose from.
Residential Project
Undertake a purposeful enterprise involving voluntary service or training away from home over a period of at least five days.

Attendance at a UK or overseas camp could qualify for this stage of the award.

The Gold Award, Pin and Certificate are awarded at either Holyrood or Buckingham Palace, following successful completion of all the award requirements.
